Traditional Korean music samples
Eligibility: open to all composers regardless of age or nationality. First place winners of the previous competition (the 2005 Sejong Music Composition Competition) are not eligible.
Prizes:
Winners will be announced in the Korea Times of Chicago in late June and on our website.
- First ($1,000), Second ($750), Third ($500), Honorable Mention ($100)
- Any of the winning entries may be subject to the following:
- Publication of music score
- Recording on DVD or CD
- Performance of selected work broadcast over Korean television or radio stations
Judging Criteria:
Judges are looking for originality, basic skills (i.e. technique), Korean themes and expressions, and whether the piece is appropriate for pre-collegiate students.
Piece Requirements:
- The piece must contain Korean folk melodies or rhythms. Transcriptions of the melodies
and recordings of sample folk tunes performed by Korean instruments can be found here.
- Must be a solo piece written for piano, violin, or cello. Violin and cello pieces may have
a piano accompaniment.
- Playing time must be less than five minutes.
- The piece must be suitable for pre-college students to perform at the Sejong Music Competition.
- The senior division of the music competition is open to high schoolers; the junior is open
to students younger than thirteen years of age.
- Please keep in mind that we are looking for pieces that can strongly convey Korean themes.
Submission Guidelines:
- The entrant's name and/or contact details cannot appear on any page of the score - the file
attachment must be anonymous.
- Having a name on the score will result in immediate disqualification.
- The application should include a short paragraph that describes the Korean thematic inclusion
in the entry.
- Entry and application form should be sent as email attachments to sejong (at) sejongsociety (dot) org.
- The subject of the email should be "Sejong Music Composition Competition Entry."
- The music score should be submitted in a PDF (.pdf) or Finale format (.mus).
- Printed scores will not be accepted.
- For violin or cello submissions with accompaniment, both a solo part and a score should be
submitted together.
- Please remember to submit an application. Forms can be downloaded here.
- We reserve the right to use all submitted pieces in future publications of the Sejong Cultural Society with no compensation to the composer.
- Should the judges deem it necessary, we reserve the right to not award any prizes.
